The sporting landscape of the Maldives is poised for a historic transformation as the Shooting Association of Maldives officially unveils the first-ever interschool shooting competition. Titled the Raajje Junior Shooting Sports Championship 2026, this landmark event represents a significant leap forward in the nation’s commitment to developing Olympic-standard athletes from a young age.
Scheduled to run from 12th April 2026 through 10th May 2026, the month-long tournament aims to bridge the gap between school-level athletics and professional competitive shooting. By introducing the sport at the interschool level, the association hopes to instill the core values of discipline, composure, and mental fortitude in the next generation of Maldivian students.
The championship is meticulously structured to accommodate various developmental stages, featuring three primary age categories. Young marksmen and markswomen will compete in the Under 15 division for those aged 13 and 14, the Under 17 division for 15 and 16-year-olds, and the Under 20 division, which includes athletes aged 17, 18, and 19. This tiered approach ensures that students compete against their peers, fostering a fair and highly competitive environment.
The technical focus of the tournament remains on the 10m Air Rifle and 10m Air Pistol disciplines. The competition's program is extensive, offering a wide array of medals across individual, team, and mixed team formats. For both the Air Rifle and Air Pistol categories, events will include Men’s and Women’s individual matches, alongside Men’s Team, Women’s Team, and the highly engaging Mixed Team events. This diverse lineup is designed to encourage school spirit and collective achievement, highlighting the importance of teamwork in what is often perceived as a solitary sport.
This inaugural championship follows a period of significant momentum for shooting sports in the region. After the recent successes seen on the international stage at the Asian Rifle/Pistol Championship in New Delhi, the Raajje Junior Championship serves as the perfect scouting ground for future national stars. It provides a formal pathway for students to move from local school ranges to representing the Maldives in international arenas.
As schools across the atolls prepare for the April commencement, the Raajje Junior Shooting Sports Championship 2026 stands as a testament to the growing popularity of precision sports. It is more than just a tournament; it is the beginning of a new legacy for Maldivian sport, where focus and steady hands pave the way to podium finishes.
